The prescription of opioids to treat patient pain is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/medications-underused-in-treating-opioid-addiction-mayo-clinic-expert-says\/\">many factors<\/a> contributing to this epidemic; to solve it, a multipronged approach is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Two new Mayo Clinic studies \u2014 one in clinical practice and one in the laboratory \u2014 could offer new solutions to help patients manage pain without the use of opioids. These projects have been singled out for federal funding under the NIH\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-funds-945-million-research-tackle-national-opioid-crisis-through-nih-heal-initiative\">Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) Initiative<\/a>, a multimillion dollar, multiorganizational approach to providing pain-treatment alternatives and turning the tide on the opioid crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpioids remain one part of the continuum of pain treatment,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayo.edu\/research\/faculty\/cheville-andrea-l-m-d\/bio-00085825\">Andrea Cheville, M.D.<\/a>, a rehabilitation physician at Mayo and <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/andrea-cheville-m-d-of-mayo-clinic-elected-to-the-national-academy-of-medicine\/\">member<\/a> of the National Academy of Medicine. \u201cThere are other options that work as well, or better in some cases, with fewer risks.
