The Higgs boson<\/i><\/b> is an elementary particle<\/a> in the Standard Model<\/a> of particle physics<\/a>, produced by the quantum excitation<\/a> of the Higgs field<\/i>,[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup> one of the fields<\/i><\/a> in particle physics<\/a> theory.[9]<\/a><\/sup> It is named after physicist Peter Higgs<\/a>, who in 1964, along with five other scientists<\/a>, proposed the Higgs mechanism<\/a> to explain why particles have mass<\/a>. This mechanism implies the existence of the Higgs boson<\/i>. The boson\u2019s existence was confirmed in 2012 by the ATLAS<\/a> and CMS<\/a> collaborations based on collisions in the LHC<\/a> at CERN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On December 10, 2013, two of the physicists, Peter Higgs<\/a> and Fran\u00e7ois Englert<\/a>, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a> for their theoretical predictions. Although Higgs\u2019s name has come to be associated with this theory (the Higgs mechanism), several researchers between about 1960 and 1972 independently developed different parts of it.<\/p>\n
