All those cores doing all kinds of processing at lightning speed, but in the end they\u2019re all waiting on an outdated network interface to stay in sync. <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/crunchbase.com\/organization\/darpa\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"organization\" data-entity=\"darpa\">DARPA<\/a> doesn\u2019t like it. So DARPA wants to change it \u2014 specifically by making a <em>new<\/em> network interface a hundred times faster.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is this. As DARPA estimates it, processors and memory on a computer or server can in a general sense work at a speed of roughly 10<sup>14<\/sup> bits per second \u2014 that\u2019s comfortably into the terabit region \u2014 and networking hardware like switches and fiber are capable of about the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe true bottleneck for processor throughput is the network <em>interface<\/em> used to connect a machine to an external network, such as an Ethernet, therefore severely limiting a processor\u2019s data ingest capability,\u201d explained DARPA\u2019s Jonathan Smith in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2019-09-26\">a news post by the agency about the project<\/a>.
