The researchers found a way to make them last longer and provide more electricity batteries by using silicon anodes \u2014 an electrode through which the current enters into an electrical device \u2014 instead of traditional graphite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday graphite is used as the main commercial material for fabricating the anode electrodes,\u201d Cengiz Ozkan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designnews.com\/electronics-test\/high-performance-lithium-ion-battery-created-using-recycled-glass-bottles\/168431290857365\" target=\"_blank\">a professor of mechanical engineering<\/a> at UC Riverside explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe replaced graphite in the anodes with our new nanosilicon material derived from waste glass bottles,\u201d he continued. \u201cIn the half-cell configuration, our batteries demonstrate performance about four times higher compared to graphite anode batteries.\u201d Researchers at the University of California, Riverside\u2019s Bourns College of Engineering used a three-step process to use a discarded glass bottle into lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who knew?
