Patel and Subir Sachdev, have recently presented a new theory of a Planckian metal that could shed light on previously unknown aspects of quantum physics. Their paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.123.066601\">published in <i>Physical Review Letters<\/i><\/a>, introduces a lattice model of fermions that describes a Planckian metal at low temperatures (<i>T<\/i>\u00e0 <i>0<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Metals contain numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/electrons\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electrons<\/a>, which carry <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/electric+current\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electric current<\/a>. When physicists consider the electrical resistance of metals, they generally perceive it as arising when the flow of current-carrying electrons is interrupted or degraded due to electrons scattering off impurities or off the crystal lattice in the metal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis picture, put forth by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drude_model\">Drude<\/a> in 1900, gives an equation for the electrical resistance in terms of how much time electrons spend moving freely between successive collisions,\u201d Patel told Phys.org. \u201cThe length of this time interval between collisions, called the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/relaxation+time\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">relaxation time<\/a>,\u2019 or \u2018electron liftetime,\u2019 is typically long enough in most common metals for the electrons to be defined as distinct, mobile objects to a microscopic observer, and the Drude picture works remarkably well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two researchers at Harvard University, Aavishkar A.
