As a supporter of Sanders, I\u2019m going to have to respectfully disagree. Here\u2019s why\u2026<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Last Sunday, presidential-hopeful Bernie Sanders released on his website what is arguably one of the most extensive plans for law enforcement oversight and criminal justice overhaul that the United States has ever seen. As a progressive, myself, and supporter of Sanders during his primary run, I fully endorse everything that\u2019s been laid out in this plan\u2014 that is, except for one minor policy.<\/p>\n<p>The plan, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/berniesanders.com\/justice-and-safety-for-all\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Justice and Safety for All<\/a>,\u201d calls to \u201cBan the use of facial recognition software for policing.\u201d It also calls for a \u201cmoratorium on the use of the algorithmic risk assessment tools in the criminal justice system until an audit is completed,\u201d whereby the audit would \u201censure these tools do not have any implicit biases that lead to unjust or excessive sentences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m perfectly fine with the policy on algorithmic risk assessment tools being used by our criminal justice system. It\u2019s not a total ban; it simply serves as a temporary safety measure until it\u2019s been proven that these algorithms won\u2019t carry with them any unjust biases. But when it comes to Sanders\u2019 policy on banning facial recognition software for policing, I simply cannot get behind it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under his plan, \u201cJustice and Safety for All,\u201d Bernie Sanders wants to ban facial recognition software for policing.
