{"id":95094,"date":"2019-08-22T02:03:01","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T09:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/study-identifies-main-culprit-behind-lithium-metal-battery-failure"},"modified":"2019-08-22T02:03:01","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T09:03:01","slug":"study-identifies-main-culprit-behind-lithium-metal-battery-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/study-identifies-main-culprit-behind-lithium-metal-battery-failure","title":{"rendered":"Study identifies main culprit behind lithium metal battery failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/study-identifies-main-culprit-behind-lithium-metal-battery-failure2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A research team led by the University of California San Diego has discovered the root cause of why lithium metal batteries fail\u2014bits of lithium metal deposits break off from the surface of the anode during discharging and are trapped as \u201cdead\u201d or inactive lithium that the battery can no longer access.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery, published Aug. 21 in <i>Nature<\/i>, challenges the conventional belief that <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/lithium+metal+batteries\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lithium metal batteries<\/a> fail because of the growth of a layer, called the solid <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/electrolyte\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electrolyte<\/a> interphase (SEI), between the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/lithium\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lithium<\/a> anode and the electrolyte.
