Many assumed it was only a matter of time until this groundbreaking technique found its way into the clinic and ushered in a regenerative medicine revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Because the same patient would be both the donor and the recipient of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cells<\/a> derived from these so-called induced <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/pluripotent+stem+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">pluripotent stem cells<\/a> (iPSCs), these cells would be seen as \u201cself\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/immune+system\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">immune system<\/a>, the thinking went, and not subject to the problems of rejection that plague conventional transplants.<\/p>\n<p>But iPSCs haven\u2019t emerged as the cure-all that was originally envisioned, due to unforeseen setbacks, including the surprising preclinical finding that iPSC-derived <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cell+transplants\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cell transplants<\/a> are often rejected, even after being reintroduced into the organism the cells were sourced from.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2006, scientists discovered a way to \u201creprogram\u201d mature cells\u2014adult skin cells, for example\u2014into stem cells that could, in principle, give rise to any tissue or organ in the body.
