A startup called ZeroAvia wants to clean things up in a big way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia<\/a> recently emerged from stealth with a zero-emission powertrain for small aircraft. It\u2019s electric, but there are no big, bulky batteries involved. ZeroAvia opted for compressed hydrogen instead.<\/p>\n<p>Why not use batteries? Compressed hydrogen is about four times as energy-dense as today\u2019s best batteries. Founder, physicist and pilot Valery Miftakhov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90388931\/this-plane-can-fly-500-miles-powered-entirely-by-hydrogen\">told FastCompany<\/a> \u201cactually getting a sizable aircraft in the air for a reasonable amount of time will be quite difficult with batteries.\u201d That\u2019s something he believes isn\u2019t likely to change in the near future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the U.S., air travel accounts for about a third of all Co2 emissions.
