And on the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/sep\/24\/india-mars-satellite-successfully-enters-orbit\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">In 2014, India sent the Mars Orbiter Mission<\/a> into space, and became the first country to send a satellite to orbit the planet at its first attempt \u2013 putting its much richer regional rival China in the shade as it became the first Asian nation to get to the red planet. The project was notable for being led by a team of female scientists; as is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jul\/22\/indias-chandrayaan-2-moon-mission-lifts-off-a-week-after-aborted-launch\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">India\u2019s second lunar probe, Chandrayaan-2<\/a> (from the Sanskrit for \u201cmoon craft\u201d), which was launched last month and is due to land on the moon in early September. And as the country establishes itself as a space power, Indians have developed an appetite for sci-fi themes in its cinema.<\/p>\n<p>The patriotic outburst that followed the Mars mission has fuelled the latest example of Indian space cinema: Mission Mangal (Sanskrit for Mars), a fictionalised account of the Orbiter Mission. Starring and produced by Bollywood actor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/nov\/13\/akshay-kumar-toilet-isnt-a-dirty-word-my-latest-film-made-me-love-the-loo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\"> Akshay Kumar<\/a>, it is due for release on 15 August, India\u2019s Independence Day. \u201cI would follow the news about India\u2019s space missions and feel proud of what we were achieving,\u201d says Kumar. \u201cBut through Mission Mangal I guess you could say I have an insider\u2019s perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/akshay-kumar\/#7809c7e1587b\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">Kumar,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/akshay-kumar\/#7809c7e1587b\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">one of the<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/akshay-kumar\/#7809c7e1587b\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\"> highest paid actors in the world<\/a>, says he had long wanted to work with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
