According to Elon Musk over the weekend, it could be the most expensive construction project in human history \u2014 and cost up to an eighth of the value of the entire global economy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/spacex\">SpaceX<\/a> CEO\u2019s vision includes not only sending the first humans to Mars, but to use that mission as a starting point to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/54358-elon-musk-explains-how-it-s-possible-to-build-a-city-on-mars-by-2050\">build a permanent settlement<\/a>. Assuming all goes to plan, Musk believes that a self-sustaining city could take shape <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/51291-spacex-here-s-the-timeline-for-getting-to-mars-and-starting-a-colony\">as early as 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What happens after that point is anyone\u2019s guess. <em>Inverse<\/em> has spoken to experts from a number of fields, who have flagged a series of issues those first inhabitants will need to address.
