A new way of creating waves \u2013 whether of light, radio or sound \u2013 that don\u2019t echo promises to improve everything from your Wi-Fi signal to medical imaging to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg22129602-200-australia-hatches-plan-to-zap-space-junk-with-lasers\">shining lasers through space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a wave travels \u2013 think of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn14172-fastest-ever-flashgun-captures-image-of-light-wave\">light<\/a> shining through water, for example \u2013 it can become scattered. This is a problem in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn17867-time-telescope-could-boost-fibre-optic-communication\">telecommunications<\/a>: if you send digital signals down a very long optical fibre, the pulses can get stretched out, and 1s can start to blend into 0s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1948, physicist Leonard Eisenbud proposed a particular way of transmitting the waves to overcome this.
