Time<\/b> is the indefinite continued progress<\/a> of existence<\/a> and events<\/a> that occur in an apparently irreversible<\/a> succession from the past<\/a>, through the present<\/a>, to the future<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup> Time is a component quantity of various measurements<\/a> used to sequence<\/a> events, to compare the duration of events or the intervals between them, and to quantify<\/a> rates of change<\/a> of quantities<\/a> in material reality<\/a> or in the conscious<\/a> experience<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> Time is often referred to as a fourth dimension<\/a>, along with three spatial<\/a> dimensions.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Time has long been an important subject of study in religion, philosophy, and science, but defining it in a manner applicable to all fields without circularity<\/a> has consistently eluded scholars.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup> Nevertheless, diverse fields such as business, industry, sports, the sciences, and the performing arts<\/a> all incorporate some notion of time into their respective measuring systems<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Time in physics<\/i> is unambiguously operationally defined as \u201cwhat a clock reads\u201d.[6]<\/sup>[15]<\/sup>[16]<\/sup> See Units of Time is one of the seven fundamental physical quantities in both the International System of Units and International System of Quantities.
