But for scientists working at the forefront of quantum computing, the hope\u2014and hype\u2014of this fundamentally different method of processing information is very real. Thanks to the quirky properties of quantum mechanics (here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2019\/02\/26\/quantum-computing-now-and-in-the-not-too-distant-future\/\">nifty primer<\/a>), quantum computers have the potential to <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2017\/03\/30\/this-is-what-makes-quantum-computers-powerful-problem-solvers\/\">massively speed up certain types of problems<\/a>, particularly those that simulate nature.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are especially enthralled with the idea of marrying the quantum world with machine learning.
