Eight companies \u2013 Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, LinkedIn and AOL \u2013 have put aside their rivalries and issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/technology\/major-tech-companies-unite-to-call-for-new-limits-on-surveillance\/2013\/12\/08\/530f0fd4-6051-11e3-bf45-61f69f54fc5f_story.html?wprss=rss_business\">call for the reform of government surveillance<\/a>. \u201cWe understand that governments have a duty to protect their citizens. But this summer\u2019s revelations highlighted the urgent need to reform government surveillance practices worldwide,\u201d says an open letter featured in full-page ads in several newspaper on Monday. \u201cThe balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual \u2014 rights that are enshrined in our Constitution.
