That\u2019s partially because it\u2019s hard to study: Scientists can\u2019t just run experiments on living brains, and experiments on animal brains don\u2019t always translate to humans. That\u2019s why researchers developed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/38240-mini-brains-organoids-rats\">brain organoid<\/a>, an artificially grown, three-dimensional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/37236-organoids-5-meo-dmt-mini-brains\">cluster of human neurons<\/a> that faithfully mimics brain development \u2014 and, as Japanese scientists <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.stemcr.2019.05.029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Wednesday in <em>Cell Stem Cell<\/em>, the <em>neural activity<\/em> of a living brain as well.<\/p>\n<p>Neurons in a living brain respond to stimuli by \u201cfiring\u201d off electrical impulses, which they use to communicate with one another and with other parts of the body. The scientists behind the new paper discovered that the brain organoids they grew from scratch in their lab also started to exhibit synchronized activity, just like neurons in an actual brain. That team included first and co-corresponding author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Hideya_Sakaguchi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hideya Sakaguchi, Ph.D.<\/a>, a postdoctoral fellow at Kyoto University currently at the Salk Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very excited to see some of the neurons activated at the same time robustly at first,\u201d Sakaguchi, who did the first of his experiments in December 2016, tells <em>Inverse<\/em>. \u201cNeurons first show individual activities, but as they form networks and connections between other neurons, they start to show synchronized activities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All human experience is rooted in the brain, but we just barely understand how it works.
