Instead of letting it zip by at incredibly high speed, they\u2019re stopping it dead: <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prx\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevX.4.031043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freezing it into crystal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, they\u2019re not shining light <em>through <\/em>crystal; rather, they making light <em>into<\/em> crystal. It\u2019s a process that involves fixing the particles of light known as photons in a single spot, freezing them permanently in one place.
