New research suggests the telltale seismic pattern shows up between 10 seconds and 15 seconds into a seismic event.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists discovered the warning sign after analyzing GPS records of peak ground displacement during dozens of earthquakes. The analysis of several GPS databases revealed a point in time when the beginnings of an earthquake takes the form of a \u201cslip pulse,\u201d the mechanical functions of which scale with magnitude.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery, published this week <a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/5\/5\/eaav2032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the journal Science Advances<\/a>, allowed scientists to differentiate between small- to medium-sized earthquakes and large to extra-large quakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Science_News\/2019\/05\/29\/Seismologists-find-possible-early-warning-sign-of-a-pending-megaquake\/3231559159728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">Read more<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 29 (UPI) \u2014 Geologists have found a possible early signature of massive earthquakes.
