UTS will lead a consortium of 26 researchers from 14 organisations in the development of an AMR \u2018knowledge engine\u2019 capable of predicting outbreaks and informing interventions, supported by a grant from the Medical Research Future Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAMR is not a simple problem confined to health and hospital settings,\u201d explains project Chief Investigator, UTS Professor of Infectious Disease Steven Djordjevic. \u201cOur pets and livestock rely on many of these same medicines, so they find their way into the food chain and into the environment through animal faeces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If left unchecked, AMR is forecast to cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050, and add a US$100 trillion burden to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/health+systems\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">health systems<\/a> worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-05-ai-powered-knowledge-game-changer-antibiotic-resistance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">Read more<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A groundbreaking project to tackle one of the world\u2019s most pressing and complex health challenges\u2014antimicrobial resistance (AMR)\u2014has secured a $1 million boost.
