{"id":90880,"date":"2019-05-17T13:02:27","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T20:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/high-school-student-uses-ai-to-detect-gravitational-waves"},"modified":"2019-05-22T07:29:55","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T14:29:55","slug":"high-school-student-uses-ai-to-detect-gravitational-waves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/high-school-student-uses-ai-to-detect-gravitational-waves","title":{"rendered":"High School Student Uses AI to Detect Gravitational Waves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/high-school-student-uses-ai-to-detect-gravitational-waves.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before he could legally drive, high school student Adam Rebei was already submitting jobs on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsa.illinois.edu\/enabling\/bluewaters\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Waters supercomputer<\/a> at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsa.illinois.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Center for Supercomputing Applications<\/a> at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (NCSA) to run complex simulations of black holes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first time using Blue Waters, we did a tour first and got to see the computer, which is a very amazing thing because it\u2019s a very powerful machine,\u201d Rebei <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsa.illinois.edu\/news\/story\/ncsa_student_spotlight_adam_rebei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">told the NCSA<\/a>, \u201cand I just remember thinking, \u2018All of the GPUs!\u2019 It\u2019s an insane amount of GPUs, and I\u2019ve never seen anything like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To get there, Rebei first took an astronomy class that led him to his work with the NCSA.
