According to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops this disease, which causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>It has been more than 100 years since Alois Alzheimer, M.D., a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, first reported the presence of senile plaques in an Alzheimer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/disease\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">disease<\/a> patient brain. It led to the discovery of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/amyloid+precursor+protein\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">amyloid precursor protein<\/a> that produces deposits or plaques of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/amyloid\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">amyloid<\/a> fragments in the brain, the suspected culprit of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Since then, amyloid <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/precursor\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">precursor<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/protein\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">protein<\/a> has been extensively studied because of its association with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
