Understanding the signal(s) that direct muscle stem cells to spring into action could uncover new ways to promote muscle growth. However, these mechanisms are poorly understood.<\/p>\n<p>Now, scientists from Sanford Burnham Prebys have uncovered a molecular signaling pathway involving Stat3 and Fam3a proteins that regulates how <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/muscle\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">muscle<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/stem+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">stem cells<\/a> decide whether to self-renew or differentiate\u2014an insight that could lead to muscle-boosting therapeutics for muscular dystrophies or age-related muscle decline. The study was published in Nature Communications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuscle stem cells can \u2018burn out\u2019 trying to regenerate tissue during the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/natural+aging+process\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">natural aging process<\/a> or due to chronic muscle disease,\u201d says Alessandra Sacco, Ph.D., senior author of the paper and associate professor in the Development, Aging and Regeneration Program at Sanford Burnham Prebys. \u201cWe believe we have found promising drug targets that direct <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/muscle+stem+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">muscle stem cells<\/a> to \u2018make the right decision\u2019 and stimulate muscle repair, potentially helping muscle tissue regeneration and maintaining tissue function in <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/chronic+conditions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">chronic conditions<\/a> such as muscular dystrophy and aging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2019-04-boosting-muscle-stem-cells-muscular.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">Read more<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lying within our muscles are stem cells, invisible engines that drive the tissue\u2019s growth and repair.
