The first of its kind, this device is inexpensive, small, thin and flexible like a sheet of plastic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/device\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">device<\/a> can work in remote areas because it provides its own power and does not need batteries,\u201d said senior author Richard Kaner, who holds UCLA\u2019s Dr. Myung Ki Hong Endowed Chair in Materials Innovation. \u201cIt\u2019s a very clever device\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/weather+station\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">weather station<\/a> that can tell you how much snow is falling, the direction the snow is falling, and the direction and speed of the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers call it a snow-based triboelectric nanogenerator, or snow TENG.
