The anniversary is a chance to shine a light on particular elements \u2013 some of which seem ubiquitous but which ordinary people beyond the world of chemistry probably don\u2019t know much about.<\/p>\n<p>One of these is <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/gold\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">gold<\/a>, which was the subject of my postgraduate degrees in chemistry, and which I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Werner_Van_Zyl\">been studying<\/a> for almost 30 years. In chemistry, gold can be considered a late starter when compared to most other metals.
