But there\u2019s reason to hope.<\/p>\n<p>While the total number of new cancer cases and deaths continues to increase, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rates of cancer diagnoses and deaths<\/a><\/em> decline each year \u2014 as absolute figures don\u2019t account for rises in life expectancy, population growth, or aging populations. We\u2019ve made great strides in understanding the disease and its various genetic and environmental origins.
