But for many years, physicists believed it energetically impossible for atoms as large as uranium (atomic mass = 235 or 238) to be split into two.<\/p>\n<p>That all changed on Feb. 11, 1939, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.umblr.com\/redirect?z=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2F143239a0&t=MWY1M2E3NjA3YTliMDAxYTY2NDFhN2U4ZmM3MmZlYThjOTVhZGNiNixqM1VsRzJGNw%3D%3D&b=t%3A8tTpln5CvOi11aY9b0ELpA&p=https%3A%2F%2Ftumblr.curiosity.com%2Fpost%2F183146886342%2Flise-meitner-is-the-forgotten-female-physicist-who&m=1\">letter to the editor<\/a> of Nature \u2014 a premier international scientific journal \u2014 that described exactly how such a thing could occur and even named it fission. In that letter, physicist Lise Meitner, with the assistance of her young nephew <a href=\"https:\/\/t.umblr.com\/redirect?z=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.atomicarchive.com%2FBios%2FFrisch.shtml&t=OWVjODcyN2JmZTcxMGY3ZDBiMjU3ZmY1YjQwNTM4NTc3MWQ4NGIzZSxqM1VsRzJGNw%3D%3D&b=t%3A8tTpln5CvOi11aY9b0ELpA&p=https%3A%2F%2Ftumblr.curiosity.com%2Fpost%2F183146886342%2Flise-meitner-is-the-forgotten-female-physicist-who&m=1\">Otto Frisch<\/a>, provided a physical explanation of how nuclear fission could happen.<\/p>\n<p>It was a massive leap forward in nuclear physics, but today Lise Meitner remains obscure and largely forgotten. She was excluded from the victory celebration because she was a Jewish woman.
