{"id":88170,"date":"2019-02-25T18:02:36","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T02:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/laser-drill-sets-a-new-world-record-in-laser-driven-electron-acceleration"},"modified":"2019-02-25T18:02:36","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T02:02:36","slug":"laser-drill-sets-a-new-world-record-in-laser-driven-electron-acceleration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/laser-drill-sets-a-new-world-record-in-laser-driven-electron-acceleration","title":{"rendered":"Laser \u2018drill\u2019 sets a new world record in laser-driven electron acceleration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/laser-drill-sets-a-new-world-record-in-laser-driven-electron-acceleration3.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Combining a first laser pulse to heat up and \u201cdrill\u201d through a plasma, and another to accelerate electrons to incredibly high energies in just tens of centimeters, scientists have nearly doubled the previous record for laser-driven particle acceleration.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/laser\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">laser<\/a>-plasma experiments, conducted at the Department of Energy\u2019s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), are pushing toward more compact and affordable types of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/particle+acceleration\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">particle acceleration<\/a> to power exotic, high-energy machines\u2014like X-ray free-electron lasers and particle colliders\u2014that could enable researchers to see more clearly at the scale of molecules, atoms, and even subatomic particles.<\/p>\n<p>The new record of propelling electrons to 7.8 billion electron volts (7.8 GeV) at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center surpasses a 4.25 GeV result at BELLA announced in 2014. The latest research is detailed in the Feb. 25 edition of the journal <i>Physical Review Letters<\/i>.
