While <a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2019\/02\/07\/green-new-deal-instant-reaction\/\">experts<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvik.org\/post\/former-energy-secretary-weighs-green-new-deal-legislation#stream\/0\">debate<\/a> whether the proposal is technologically or politically feasible, the so-called Green New Deal is about more than shifting to cleaner, more advanced forms of energy sources. It\u2019s also about shifting to more traditional forms of agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>While farming generally takes a back seat to energy in discussions of climate, it accounts for up to a third of carbon pollution, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/one-third-of-our-greenhouse-gas-emissions-come-from-agriculture-1.11708\">one account<\/a>. Tractors and trucks that harvest and transport our food burn gasoline and diesel, generating pollution. Synthetic fertilizers derived from fossil fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/fertilizer-produces-far-more-greenhouse-gas-expected\">spur<\/a> the release of heat-trapping gas from the soil, and cows and sheep emit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/sep\/29\/methane-emissions-cattle-11-percent-higher-than-estimated\">large volumes<\/a> of planet-warming pollution. Then there is the matter of agricultural giants <a href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/environment\/tropical-deforestation-leads-to-more-carbon-emissions\">burning forests<\/a> to clear land for farming and grazing, thereby releasing carbon stored in trees into the atmosphere and reducing the capacity of the land to store CO2.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, while agriculture is a big part of the problem, it can also be part of the solution.
