Together with the Harvard team, Levanon has discovered that \u201cwhen inhibiting this mechanism, the immune system can be harnessed to fight cancer cells in a particularly efficient manner, and most effectively in lung cancer and melanoma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that if the mechanism is blocked, the immune system is much more sensitive,\u201d Levanon said. \u201cWhen the mechanism is deactivated, the immune system becomes much more aggressive against the tumor cells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0768-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink: https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0768-9\">researchers<\/a>, most patients with cancer either do not respond to immune checkpoint blockade (a type of drug that blocks certain proteins made by some types of immune system cells, such as T cells, and some cancer cells) or develop resistance to it. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/immune-checkpoint-inhibitor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink: https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/immune-checkpoint-inhibitor\">these proteins<\/a> help keep immune responses in check and can keep T cells from killing cancer cells. \u201cWhen these proteins are blocked, the \u2018brakes\u2019 on the immune system are released and T cells are able to kill cancer cells better,\u201d says the NCI.
