Flash forward to today, scientists are looking to make that very <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2018\/05\/09\/how-to-leverage-the-power-of-science-fiction-for-exponential-innovation\/\">science fiction dream<\/a> a reality for Earth.<\/p>\n<p>There has been tremendous research on space-based solar power (SBSP) or space solar power (SSP) since the mid 20th century. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space-based_solar_power#Timeline\">Here is a great timeline<\/a> of the various international studies and projects related to SBSP.<\/p>\n<p>With SBSP, we could solve our energy and greenhouse gas emission problems with little environmental impact. Professor Sergio Pellegrino of CalTech <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/em8T1nOL0tM?t=220\">recently said<\/a> an SBSP system would receive eight times more energy than Earth does.
