The device could find applications in quantum computers and microscopic refrigerators cooling down tiny objects with pinpoint accuracy. The research was published Dec. 4 in <em>Physical Review B<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The second law says that the entropy \u2014 that is, the degree of disorder or randomness \u2014 of an isolated system never decreases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur demon causes a device called a qubit to transition into a more orderly state,\u201d explained the study\u2019s lead author Andrey Lebedev of MIPT and ETH Zurich. \u201cImportantly, the demon does not alter the qubit\u2019s energy and acts over a distance that is huge for quantum mechanics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-12\/miop-qmd122018.php\">https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018&#45;12\/miop-qmd122018.php<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, ETH Zurich, and Argonne National Laboratory, U.S, have described an extended quantum Maxwell\u2019s demon, a device locally violating the second law of thermodynamics in a system located 1\u20135 meters away from the demon.
