{"id":85980,"date":"2018-12-19T08:22:22","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T16:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/an-interview-with-daniel-munoz-espin"},"modified":"2018-12-19T08:22:22","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T16:22:22","slug":"an-interview-with-daniel-munoz-espin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/an-interview-with-daniel-munoz-espin","title":{"rendered":"An Interview With Daniel Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/an-interview-with-daniel-munoz-espin2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eha-heales.org\/\">Fourth Eurosymposium on Healthy Ageing<\/a> (EHA), which was held in Brussels, Belgium last November, we had the opportunity to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oncology.cam.ac.uk\/research\/our-research\/munoz-espin\">Dr. Daniel Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn<\/a> from the Oncology Department of the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn received his PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, within the viral DNA replication group at the Centre of Molecular Biology Severo Ochoa, where he worked under the supervision of one of the most famous Spanish scientists, Dr. Margarita Salas. Dr. Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn\u2019s postdoctoral research resulted in several published papers and a 2013 patent focused on DNA replication; he then joined the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnio.es\/\">Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncol\u00f3gicas<\/a><\/em>, or CNIO, the Spanish National Centre for Cancer Research, specifically the team of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/profile\/manuel-serrano\">Dr. Manuel Serrano<\/a>, co-author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/abstract\/S0092-8674(13)00645-4\">The Hallmarks of Aging<\/a><\/em>. The research that Dr. Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn conducted during this time demonstrated how cellular senescence doesn\u2019t play a role just in aging and cancer but also in normal embryonic development, where it contributes to the shaping of our bodies\u2014a process that was termed \u201cdevelopmentally-programmed senescence\u201d, whose concept was very favorably received by the scientific community.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Dr. Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn serves as Principal Investigator of the Cancer Early Detection Programme at the Department of Oncology of Cambridge University; with his current team, Dr. Mu\u00f1oz-Esp\u00edn developed a novel method to target senescent cells, which was <a href=\"http:\/\/embomolmed.embopress.org\/content\/early\/2018\/07\/16\/emmm.201809355\">reported<\/a> in <em> EMBO Molecular Medicine<\/em>.
