Apple has a patent for AirPods with built in biometrics. It\u2019s being called \u201cuniversal\u201d because the idea calls for ear pods that can be worn in either ear. That would mean no more left-right business.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the tech news coverage is focusing on the \u201cinterchangeable\u201d aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/patent\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">patent<\/a> concept. <i>9to5Mac<\/i>\u2019s Alex Allegro said interchangeable earbuds \u201cequipped with \u2018at least one\u2019 biometric sensor, which could detect left\/right ear placement and accordingly adjust audio.\u201d He assessed the potential advantages as \u201cevolving AirPods from a separate left \/ right unit to a single component,\u201d which could lower costs and simplify getting a replacement AirPod.<\/p>\n<p>If the <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/ear+buds\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">ear buds<\/a> are interchangeable, then it is a big deal in terms of user satisfaction. OK, the product is popular now but <i>The Verge<\/i> reminds us that the AirPod is not a perfect fit for everyone.
