He won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie, the latter of whom was Becquerel\u2019s graduate student. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/international-system-of-measurement-si-2699435\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">SI<\/a> unit for radioactivity called the becquerel (or Bq), which measures the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/definition-of-radiation-and-examples-605579\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">ionizing radiation<\/a> that is released when an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-is-an-atom-603816\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">atom<\/a> experiences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/why-radioactive-decay-occurs-608649\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\">radioactive decay<\/a>, is also named after Becquerel.<\/p>\n<p>Becquerel was born December 15, 1852 in Paris, France, to Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel and Aurelie Quenard. At an early age, Becquerel attended the preparatory school Lyc\u00e9e Louis-le-Grand, located in Paris.
