Other necessary conditions include low population densities, low market value of the resources, variability in resource distribution and an ethos of sharing.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Sometimes, there is no \u201ctragedy\u201d in the tragedy of the commons, according to a new analysis that challenges a widely accepted theory.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have long believed that when there is <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/open+access\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">open access<\/a> to a shared resource, people will inevitably overuse it, leading to ruin for everyone\u2014an idea known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/tragedy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">tragedy<\/a> of the commons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in an analysis of eight case studies from around the world\u2014from foragers in Australia to mangrove fishers in Ecuador\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/researchers\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">researchers<\/a> found that people can successfully share and sustainably use resources, under certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-11-people-sustainably-resources-conditions.html\">https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018&#45;11-people-sustainably-resources-conditions.html<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s why freedom of movement is one of the key conditions necessary to successfully share resources.
