{"id":84379,"date":"2018-11-02T06:22:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T13:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/your-native-language-affects-what-you-can-and-cant-see"},"modified":"2018-11-02T06:22:15","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T13:22:15","slug":"your-native-language-affects-what-you-can-and-cant-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/your-native-language-affects-what-you-can-and-cant-see","title":{"rendered":"Your native language affects what you can and can\u2019t see"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/your-native-language-affects-what-you-can-and-cant-see.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now in a new paper, published in <i>Psychological Science<\/i>, Martin Maier and Rasha Abdel Rahman at the Humboldt University of Berlin report that by affecting visual processing at an early stage, such linguistic differences can even determine whether someone will see a coloured shape \u2013 or they won\u2019t. \u201cOur native language is thus one of the forces that determine what we consciously perceive,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The wavelengths of light that we perceive as colours form a smooth continuum, but crucially, the colour categories that people use to divide up this spectrum vary between languages. Maier and Abdel-Rahman studied native Greek-, Russian- and German-speakers for whom these categories differ.<\/p>\n<p>In both Greek and Russian, there is a dedicated category-word for \u201clight blue\u201d and another for \u201cdark blue\u201d but no specific word for \u201cblue\u201d as a broader category. In German (as in English), people can use qualifiers to refer to \u201clight blue\u201d, \u201cnavy blue\u201d or \u201csky blue\u201d, and so on, but there are no dedicated category words for these shades. On the other hand, in German (also as in English) there is a dedicated word \u201cblue\u201d (blau in German) to cover all the shades of blue. However, Russian, Greek and German alike have a dedicated category word for referring to all shades of \u201cgreen\u201d, just as we do in English.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier work already showed that having a category term for something \u2013 whether it\u2019s an object or a colour \u2013 speeds up a person\u2019s ability to identify that item among a host of others. Russian-speakers are faster at discriminating between light and dark blue colour patches than English-speakers, for example.
