{"id":82300,"date":"2018-09-04T07:02:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T14:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/denvers-inequities-in-park-access-traced-to-segregation-funding-policies"},"modified":"2018-09-04T07:02:21","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T14:02:21","slug":"denvers-inequities-in-park-access-traced-to-segregation-funding-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/denvers-inequities-in-park-access-traced-to-segregation-funding-policies","title":{"rendered":"Denver\u2019s inequities in park access traced to segregation, funding policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/denvers-inequities-in-park-access-traced-to-segregation-funding-policies.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Current inequities in access to Denver\u2019s parks that are found among the city\u2019s minorities and low-income residents are the legacy of exclusionary local and state zoning codes, and funding policies that favored investment in wealthy neighborhoods, a new study found.<\/p>\n<p>Although these disparities have declined over time, these improvements were driven primarily by gentrification, with ethnic minorities\u2019 relocating into suburban areas with greater <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/park\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">park<\/a> acreage as whites returned to the urban core, rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/city\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">city<\/a> officials\u2019 efforts to promote equity, said lead author Alessandro Rigolon, a professor of recreation, sport and tourism at the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>To determine why Denver parks don\u2019t adequately serve all city residents, Rigolon and co-author Jeremy Nemeth of the University of Colorado conducted a comprehensive case study of the city\u2019s practices for establishing and funding its <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/urban+parks\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">urban parks<\/a> from 1902, when both the city and county of Denver were founded, through 2015.
