As chair of the United Nations\u2019 Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) meetings on lethal autonomous weapons, he has the task of shepherding 125 member states through discussions on the thorny technical and ethical issue of \u201ckiller robots\u201d \u2014 military robots that could theoretically engage targets independently. It\u2019s a subject that has attracted a glaring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/innovations\/wp\/2017\/08\/21\/elon-musk-calls-for-ban-on-killer-robots-before-weapons-of-terror-are-unleashed\/?utm_term=.746bba42e073\">media spotlight<\/a> and pressure from NGOs like Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which is backed by Tesla\u2019s Elon Musk and Alphabet\u2019s Mustafa Suleyman, to ban such machines outright.<\/p>\n<p>Gill has to corral national delegations \u2014 diplomats, lawyers, and military personnel \u2014 as well as academics, AI entrepreneurs, industry associations, humanitarian organizations, and NGOs in order for member states to try to reach a consensus on this critical security issue.<\/p>\n<p>The subject of killer robots can spark heated emotions. The Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit that works to \u201cmitigate existential risks facing humanity\u201d such as artificial intelligence, launched its sensationalistic short film <em>Slaughterbots<\/em> at a side event hosted by the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots at the CCW\u2019s meetings last November.
