{"id":81409,"date":"2018-08-06T09:22:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T16:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/building-the-backbone-of-a-smarter-smart-home"},"modified":"2018-08-10T07:14:23","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T14:14:23","slug":"building-the-backbone-of-a-smarter-smart-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/building-the-backbone-of-a-smarter-smart-home","title":{"rendered":"Building the backbone of a smarter smart home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/building-the-backbone-of-a-smarter-smart-home.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The state of artificial intelligence (AI) in smart homes nowadays might be likened to a smart but moody teenager: It\u2019s starting to hit its stride and discover its talents, but it doesn\u2019t really feel like answering any questions about what it\u2019s up to and would really rather be left alone, OK?<\/p>\n<p>William Yeoh, assistant professor of computer science and engineering in the School of Engineering &amp; Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, is working to help smart-home AI to grow up.<\/p>\n<p>The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Yeoh a $300,000 grant to assist in developing smart-home AI algorithms that can determine what a user wants by both asking questions and making smart guesses, and then plan and schedule accordingly.
