{"id":81057,"date":"2018-07-30T12:02:28","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T19:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/hubble-snapped-exquisite-photos-of-mars-and-saturn-as-they-passed-earth"},"modified":"2018-07-31T12:06:10","modified_gmt":"2018-07-31T19:06:10","slug":"hubble-snapped-exquisite-photos-of-mars-and-saturn-as-they-passed-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/hubble-snapped-exquisite-photos-of-mars-and-saturn-as-they-passed-earth","title":{"rendered":"Hubble Snapped Exquisite Photos of Mars and Saturn as They Passed Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/hubble-snapped-exquisite-photos-of-mars-and-saturn-as-they-passed-earth.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well lit and close to Earth this summer, Mars and Saturn got the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/dope-space-pics\">crisp glamor shots<\/a> that they so richly deserve, courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p>On June 27, Saturn\u2019s orbit brought it into opposition with the Earth, meaning that the two planets were fully aligned with the sun, and as a consequence Saturn could reflect a maximum amount of sunlight back towards Earth. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/42709-hubble-settles-galactic-debate\">Hubble<\/a> \u2014 NASA\u2019s cheeky interstellar <em>paparazzo<\/em> and a non-sentient satellite containing imaging hardware \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacetelescope.org\/images\/heic1814b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observed the planet on June 6, 2018<\/a>, while it was about 870 million miles from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Due to Saturn\u2019s tilt toward the Earth at this moment in its orbit, Hubble was able to very clearly image all of the bands and gaps that comprise Saturn\u2019s rings: Moving inward from the outermost ring, these are known as the A ring, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rings_of_Saturn#Encke_Gap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encke Gap<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rings_of_Saturn#Cassini_Division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cassini Division<\/a>, the B ring, and the C ring with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rings_of_Saturn#Maxwell_Gap_and_Ringlet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maxwell Gap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/47459-mars-saturn-opposition-party-pics\">https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/47459-mars-saturn-opposition-party-pics<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well lit and close to Earth this summer, Mars and Saturn got the crisp glamor shots that they so richly deserve, courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope.
