Title is a bit misleading \u2014 atheism is only unpolular with totalitarian regimes (and Templeton Foundation?) \u2014 interesting.<\/p>\n

Although Johnson said he found the team\u2019s research useful and important, he was unimpressed by their claim to have outperformed previous predictive methods. \u201cLinear regression analysis is not very powerful for prediction,\u201d he said. \u201cI was a little surprised by the strength of their claims.\u201d He cautioned that we should be skeptical about the word prediction<\/em> in relation to this type of model. Opinion<\/em> might be better.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to have as a tool,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like, you go to the doctor, they give an opinion. It\u2019s always an opinion, we never say a doctor\u2019s prediction. Usually, we go with the doctor\u2019s opinion because they\u2019ve seen many cases like this, many humans who come in with the same thing. It\u2019s even more of an opinion with these types of models, because they haven\u2019t necessarily seen many cases just like it\u2014history mimics the past but doesn\u2019t exactly repeat it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silver lining here is that if the power of the models is being overstated then so, too, is the ethical concern.<\/p>\n
