As 20 teams gather in Hawthorne, California, for SpaceX\u2019s third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/47200-spacex-hyperloop-elon-musk-shares-teams-prepping-for-speed-competition\">pod<\/a> racing competition on Sunday, the Netherlands-based group could be one of the key drivers in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/transportation\">transportation<\/a> revolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur objective is to go faster than the current record,\u201d Cl\u00e9ment Hienen, the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/design\">design<\/a> engineer, tells <em>Inverse<\/em>. \u201cFor sure, we designed to break the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bold claim, especially considering the wider industry. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/elon-musk\">Elon Musk<\/a> first released his white paper for a vacuum-sealed-tube-based transportation system in 2013, he claimed pods could fly through at a theoretical maximum speed of 700 mph \u2014 cutting a six-hour drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco down to just 30 minutes. Musk\u2019s own firms set a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/36028-elon-musk-hyperloop-speed-record-tesla-spacex\">public speed record of 220 mph<\/a> in August 2017, only for Richard Branson-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/topic\/virgin-hyperloop-one\">Virgin Hyperloop One<\/a> to beat the record with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/39549-virgin-hyperloop-one-phase-iii-testing\">240 mph in December 2017<\/a>.
