Nearly 400 years later, NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope used its powerful optics to look deep into space\u2014enabling scientists to pin down the age of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Suffice it to say that getting a better look at things produces major scientific advances.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper published on July 18 in The <i>Astrophysical Journal<\/i>, a team of scientists led by Craig DeForest\u2014solar physicist at Southwest Research Institute\u2019s branch in Boulder, Colorado\u2014demonstrate that this historical trend still holds. Using advanced algorithms and data-cleaning techniques, the team discovered never-before-detected, fine-grained structures in the outer <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/corona\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">corona<\/a>\u2014the Sun\u2019s million-degree atmosphere\u2014by analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/images\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">images<\/a> taken by NASA\u2019s STEREO spacecraft.
