Sure, they might come pretty close from time to time, but they tend to buzz harmlessly by \u2014 after all, Earth is a pretty tiny target in the vastness of space.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t be prepared, though \u2014 and NASA, along with several other US federal agencies, has been putting together a contingency plan.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve called the collective the Interagency Working Group for Detecting and Mitigating the Impact of Earth-bound Near-Earth Objects, or DAMIEN, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damien_Thorn\">which isn\u2019t ominous at all<\/a>, and released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/National-Near-Earth-Object-Preparedness-Strategy-and-Action-Plan-23-pages-1MB.pdf\">20-page document<\/a> that outlines the asteroid \u2014 or near-Earth object (NEO) \u2014 plans for the next decade.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nasa-nnsa-dod-asteroid-threat-preparedness-report-damien\">https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nasa-nnsa-dod-asteroid-threat-p...ort-damien<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We don\u2019t actually have a lot to be afraid of when it comes to asteroids.
