A report from the American Automobile Association released Tuesday shows that 73 percent of drivers would be too afraid to ride in a self-driving car, a marked jump from the 63 percent reported late last year, with millennial distrust jumping from 49 percent to 64 percent over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aaa.com\/2018\/05\/aaa-american-trust-autonomous-vehicles-slips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results<\/a> of the survey come despite autonomous-vehicle makers reporting strong signs of progress. Waymo, which started life as Google\u2019s self-driving car project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/42097-waymo-self-driving-truck\">announced in March that it\u2019s<\/a> accumulated over 5 billion miles in virtual driving and 5 million miles in real-world driving, after opening its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/30744-waymo-autonomous-car-plans-made-public\">autonomous minivan service<\/a> to the public last year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who said in February he\u2019s \u201cpretty excited about how much progress we\u2019re making on the neural net front,\u201d has predicted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/41074-tesla-elon-musk-autonomous-driving\">autonomous driving for existing vehicles<\/a> could surface in a matter of months.
