A recent paper lends this relationship a whole new meaning: a team of researchers headed by Professor Magdalena G\u00f6tz and their collaborators from the LMU (Professor Benedikt Grothe, Chair of Neurobiology) and the Henrich-Heine University D\u00fcsseldorf have discovered that the flow of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/cerebrospinal+fluid\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cerebrospinal fluid<\/a> is a key signal for neural stem cell renewal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeural <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/stem+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">stem cells<\/a> in the brain can divide and mature into neurons and this process plays important roles in various regions of the brain \u2013 including olfactory sense and memory,\u201d explains Magdalena G\u00f6tz, Head of LMU Department of Physiological Genomics and Director of the Institute for Stem Cell Research at Helmholtz Zentrum M\u00fcnchen. \u201cThese <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cells<\/a> are located in what is known as the neurogenic stem cell niche one of which is located at the walls of the lateral ventricles, where they are in contact with circulating cerebrospinal fluid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-05-cerebrospinal-fluid-division.html\">https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018&#45;05-cerebrospinal-fluid-division.html<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stem cells in the brain can divide and mature into neurons participating in various brain functions, including memory.
