{"id":78345,"date":"2018-05-04T12:22:22","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T19:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/the-gut-microbiome-contributes-to-atherosclerosis"},"modified":"2018-05-09T11:12:18","modified_gmt":"2018-05-09T18:12:18","slug":"the-gut-microbiome-contributes-to-atherosclerosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/the-gut-microbiome-contributes-to-atherosclerosis","title":{"rendered":"The Gut Microbiome Contributes to Atherosclerosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/the-gut-microbiome-contributes-to-atherosclerosis.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new study published by researchers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwo.ca\/\">Western University<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawsonresearch.ca\/\">Lawson Health Research Institute<\/a> has shown a link between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafscience.org\/microbiota\/\">gut microbiome<\/a> and atherosclerosis.<\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atherosclerosis-journal.com\/article\/S0021-9150(18)30200-4\/pdf\">study<\/a>, the team examined blood levels of metabolic products in the gut microbiomes of 316 people from three groups: those with regular levels of plaque for their age, those who had low levels of plaque despite being at high risk, and those who had unusually high levels of plaque.<\/p>\n<p>They discovered that in the patients with unusually high levels of plaque, there were significantly higher blood levels of harmful metabolic products. Specifically, these were the metabolites TMAO, p-cresyl sulfate, p-cresyl glucuronide, and phenylacetylglutamine, which are created by gut bacteria.
