{"id":78210,"date":"2018-05-03T07:22:41","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T14:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/are-public-objections-to-wind-farms-overblown"},"modified":"2018-05-04T11:04:49","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T18:04:49","slug":"are-public-objections-to-wind-farms-overblown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/are-public-objections-to-wind-farms-overblown","title":{"rendered":"Are public objections to wind farms overblown?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/are-public-objections-to-wind-farms-overblown.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While most surveys suggest that the public generally supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awea.org\/MediaCenter\/content.aspx?ItemNumber=9071\">wind and solar power<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wind-watch.org\/allies.php\">opposition from local communities and residents<\/a> sometimes blocks or delays specific new projects.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the ill-fated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boem.gov\/Massachusetts-Cape-Wind\/\">Cape Wind offshore project<\/a>, which was slated to be powering Cape Cod by now. Although Massachusetts has some of the nation\u2019s strongest renewable energy policies, <a href=\"http:\/\/saveoursound.org\/\">a group of coastal homeowners<\/a> in that state objected vociferously soon after Cape Wind Associates, the developer, first proposed building it in 2001. They ultimately filed more than a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offshorewindhub.org\/resource\/1523\">dozen lawsuits<\/a> over 14 years, creating hassles and delays that along with opposition from other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/19\/us\/offshore-cape-wind-farm.html\">parties<\/a> doomed it.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?hl=en&user=UdmJ66YAAAAJ\">renewable energy researchers<\/a> witnessing similar storylines play out across the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=IMWAynMAAAAJ&hl=en\">we wanted to see<\/a> how much local opposition there is to existing <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/wind+farms\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">wind farms<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/wind\/wind-energy-technologies-office\">With funding from the Energy Department<\/a> and help from our colleagues, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=831LSZ8AAAAJ&hl=en\">we teamed up<\/a> to undertake the largest scientific study to date on <a href=\"https:\/\/emp.lbl.gov\/projects\/wind-neighbor-survey\">how people who live near U.S. wind farms perceive them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-05-farms-overblown.html\">https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018&#45;05-farms-overblown.html<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While most surveys suggest that the public generally supports wind and solar power, opposition from local communities and residents sometimes blocks or delays specific new projects.
