{"id":78156,"date":"2018-05-01T06:42:24","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T13:42:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/how-to-make-solar-hydrogen-year-round"},"modified":"2018-05-04T11:12:24","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T18:12:24","slug":"how-to-make-solar-hydrogen-year-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/how-to-make-solar-hydrogen-year-round","title":{"rendered":"How to make solar hydrogen year round"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/how-to-make-solar-hydrogen-year-round2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Researchers have built a new dynamic model showing how hydrogen produced with concentrated solar thermal energy can be made more continuously through a novel seasonal control strategy with ceria (CeO<sub>2<\/sub>) particles buffering the effect of variation in solar radiation.<\/p>\n<p>A paper, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarpaces.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dynamic-Model-of-a-Continuous-Hydrogen-Production-Plant-Based-onCeO2-Thermochemical-Cycle.pdf\">Dynamic Model of a Continuous Hydrogen Production Plant Based on CeO<sub>2<\/sub> Thermochemical Cycle<\/a>,\u201d presented at the SolarPACES2017 Annual Conference, proposes using ceria <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/particles\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">particles<\/a> not only as the redox reactant in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/hydrogen+production\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">hydrogen production<\/a>, but also for heat storage and heat transfer media (or medium) to control the temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen can be produced by splitting water (H<sub>2<\/sub>O into H<sub>2<\/sub> and oxygen) at very high temperatures using concentrated solar thermal (CST) \u2014 avoiding today\u2019s use of fossil fuels for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/hydrogen\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">hydrogen<\/a> production.
