Yet the plants have the technical ability to adjust to the changing demand for power and thus better accommodate sources of renewable energy such as wind or solar power.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently explored the benefits of doing just that. If nuclear <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/plants\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">plants<\/a> generated <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/power\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">power<\/a> in a more flexible manner, the researchers say, the plants could lower electricity costs for consumers, enable the use of more <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/renewable+energy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">renewable energy<\/a>, improve the economics of nuclear <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/energy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">energy<\/a> and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The team explored technical constraints on flexible operations at <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/nuclear+power+plants\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">nuclear power plants<\/a> and introduced a new way to model how those challenges affect how power systems operate. \u201cFlexible nuclear power operations are a \u2018win-win-win,\u2019 lowering power system operating costs, increasing revenues for nuclear plant owners and significantly reducing curtailment of renewable energy,\u201d wrote the team in an <i>Applied Energy<\/i> article published online on April 24.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-04-nuclear-renewable-energy.html\">https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018&#45;04-nuclear-renewable-energy.html<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nuclear power plants typically run either at full capacity or not at all.
